GoDaddy website builder accessibility fixes (Websites + Marketing)

How to fix alt text, colour contrast, headings, buttons and forms on a GoDaddy Websites + Marketing site, what you can't change in the builder, and how to test it.

GoDaddy's Websites + Marketing builder is a managed editor: you change content and settings, and GoDaddy controls most of the template code. That means many of the common accessibility fixes are quick edits in the builder, and a few problems sit in code you can't reach. This guide covers both.

1. Add alt text to every meaningful image

GoDaddy's own help article Edit a photo on my website explains where alt text lives:

  1. Open your GoDaddy product page, expand Websites + Marketing and select Manage next to your site, then Edit Website.
  2. Select the photo. For the big cover image at the top of the home page, select the header and then Cover Media.
  3. Type a short description in the Image Description box. That is the image's alt text.
  4. Select Done, then publish your site. GoDaddy saves edits automatically, but visitors only see them after you publish.

Describe what matters on that page: "Technician fitting a new water heater in a garage" beats "IMG_2041". For ideas, see 20 alt text examples, and check a live page with our free alt text checker. Purely decorative images don't need a description.

2. Check your theme colours for contrast

Light grey text, white text on a pale photo, and pastel buttons are the most common problems we see. Test your text and button colours with our free colour contrast checker: normal text needs at least 4.5:1 against its background and large text 3:1. If a pair fails, choose a darker or lighter colour option for that section in the builder, and avoid putting text directly on busy photos.

3. Keep headings in order

Use one main heading per page, then section headings below it. Don't pick a heading style just because it looks bigger. Screen-reader users jump between headings, so the order should match the page outline. See heading structure for SEO and accessibility.

4. Write buttons and links that make sense on their own

"Click here" and "Learn more" repeated five times don't tell anyone where they go. Use button text like "Book a cleaning" or "Get a roofing quote". Social and contact icons with no text are a common automated finding; if you can't add a name to an icon in the builder, also show the phone number and email as plain text. More in link text and buttons.

5. Make contact and booking forms clear

Every field needs a name a visitor can still see after they start typing, so don't rely on placeholder text alone. Say which fields are required in words, not just with colour or an asterisk, and offer a phone or email alternative next to the form. Our accessible contact forms guide shows what good looks like.

6. Put menus, prices and key facts on the page as text

Price lists, menus and flyers uploaded as images or PDFs can't be read by screen readers or resized cleanly on a phone. Type the important information into a text section as well.

What you may not be able to fix in the builder

Some issues come from the template itself, such as how the mobile menu button is labelled or how page regions are marked up. If an automated scan flags something you can't find a setting for, note the page and the message, and report it to GoDaddy support. In the meantime, make sure visitors have another way to reach you, and say so in an accessibility statement (our free statement generator makes one in a few minutes).

Test it yourself in 15 minutes

  1. Run our free homepage snapshot on your published site.
  2. Try the keyboard navigation test: can you reach the menu, buttons and form with Tab and Enter, and see where you are?
  3. Zoom your browser to 200% and check that nothing is cut off. See mobile and zoom checks.

Where Altwise fits, honestly

Our $149 Fix-Pack scans up to 10 pages of your published site with axe-core and ranks the issues with copy-paste fixes. Our full step-by-step click paths are written for Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Shopify and Webflow. The report also recognises GoDaddy Websites + Marketing sites: it marks your platform, gives GoDaddy's own Image Description steps for missing alt text, and for other issues names each one, the element it's on and the general fix, with a pointer back to this guide, so you (or your web person) apply it in the builder using the steps above. An automated scan can't test everything, and the Fix-Pack doesn't replace a manual audit. It comes with a 14-day refund promise; see a sample report first.
