Salon and spa website accessibility: booking, menus and photos
Accessibility fixes for salon, spa and barbershop websites: online booking widgets, service menus, gallery photos and Instagram embeds.
Salons and spas usually run on Squarespace, Wix or a booking platform, with a photo gallery, a service menu and an embedded booking widget. Here's how to make each part usable for everyone.
1. Service menus and prices
Put the menu on the page as text, not as an image or a PDF. A simple list or table with headings ("Cuts", "Colour", "Treatments") works well for screen readers and search engines.
2. Gallery photos
Describe the style: "Shoulder-length bob with copper balayage". Purely decorative background images can use empty alt text.
3. Booking widgets
Test your booking flow with only the keyboard: can you pick a service, a stylist, a time and confirm? If the third-party widget fails, offer phone and text booking next to it and say so in your accessibility statement.
4. Instagram and social embeds
Embedded feeds often have unlabeled images. Make sure key information (hours, location, offers) also appears as text on your site.
5. Contrast on elegant designs
Thin, light-grey fonts on white or cream backgrounds are common in beauty branding and often fail the 4.5:1 contrast ratio. Darken the text slightly; it usually keeps the look.
